Deep tissue massage is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots. This is a full body revitalizing massage. It is intended to dissolve adhesions that affect mobility, muscle and tendon stiffness and pain, within specific regions of your body. This massage improves muscle tone, flexibility, and circulation, and relieves chronic stress and soreness. For best massage results, clients should be prepared for a higher than normal intensity/pressure massage level than normally expected in a relaxation type massage.

For overall best massage results during any massage treatment, clients should give the following recommendations and observations consideration:
Drink plenty of water after your massage- the best massage treatments will release toxins in the body. The amounts vary on the intensity of the chosen massage and your level of tension (Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage, hot stone massage all release toxins into the body as part of the therapeutic function of massage). Drinking plenty of water throughout the day after your massage will help flush out these toxins giving you a better long term result.
You will likely be sore after your massage - Muscle soreness ranging from slight to the feeling you get after an incredible workout or session of strenuous exercise is common depending on various elements of your massage. Your massage intensity level, your own level of tension before treatment, and the duration of time you have had that tension will all affect muscle soreness after your massage. The best massages will create this soreness as a part of the therapeutic function of massage. Once the soreness is gone, you will notice decreased tension, increase flexibility and mobility.
Adding a regular regimen of bi-monthly or monthly massage will reveal highly beneficial long term therapeutic results and overall reduced tension, increased flexibility and other well noted health benefits. Consult with your massage therapist to create a customized massage schelude to realize the best possible results.
